Urinary tract infection
All Antimicrobial's should be prescribed according to Trust antimicrobial policy or on the advice of a microbiologist. Restricted antimicrobials should be prescribed for the use or department specified unless on advice of the microbiologist. Please note some non formulary items maybe prescribed on strict advice of the microbiology team direction only.
Where antimicrobials are listed in the NICE/PHE Summary of antimicrobial prescribing guidance and this guidance is agreed locally, that those antibiotics are considered on formulary when prescribed in line with the guidance

April 2023: Nitrofurantoin: reminder of the risks of pulmonary and hepatic adverse drug reactions
September 2014: Nitrofurantoin now contraindicated in most patients with eGFR of less than 45ml/1.73m2. However, a short course (3 to 7 days) may be used with caution in certain patients with an eGFR of 30 to 44 ml/min. Only prescribe to such patients to treat lower urinary tract infection with suspected or proven multi-drug resistant pathogens when the benefits of nitrofurantoin are considered to outweigh the risks of side effects.
