NG33: Tuberculosis

Rifampicin is a key component of any antituberculosis regimen. It may also be used for serious staphylococcal infections, e.g. endocarditis and also as first line in the prophylaxis for meningitis contacts. Rifampicin is an enzyme inducer and has numerous drug interactions including the contraceptive pill (see BNF and SPC).

Pyridoxine should be given with isoniazid for the prophylaxis of isoniazid-induced neuropathy.

Rifampicin is an antibiotic used to treat specific infections. Always follow the relevant antimicrobial prescribing guidance (Trust or Primary Care).

  • TuberculosisHospital-only use. Rifampicin for the treatment of tuberculosis should be initiated and managed under specialist supervision in secondary care.
  • Other indications – May be prescribed in primary care where indicated (e.g. prevention of secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis, staphylococcal infections), in line with local guidelines or microbiologist advice.
