Drug Safety Update

January 2008: Desmopressin (DesmoMelt) report all suspected adverse events on a yellow card. Healthcare professionals should remain vigilant for signs and symptoms of hyponatraemia associated with use of desmopressin, particularly the melt formulation.

The nasal spray is no longer licensed for primary nocturnal enuresis due to increased risk of hyponatraemia compared to the oral formulation.

Tolvaptan is only approved for the following two indications:

Tolvaptan for hyponatraemia secondary to the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) in patients requiring cancer chemotherapy. This is commissioned by NHSE as per their commissioning policy and does not require blu-teq completion.

Tolvaptan for treating autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease as per NICE TA358. This is ICB commissioned and requires blu-teq completion.

Please note: there can variation in the licensing of different medicines containing the same drug. The Samsca brand is not licensed for the treatment of polycystic kidney disease
