Only for prescribing in primary and secondary care where OTC/prescribed colecalciferol is ineffective/intolerant/relatively contraindicated.  This would therefore be restricted for patients with:

  • impaired hepatic function (where AST/ALT is twice the upper limit of normal)
  • malabsorption
  • obesity
  • where there is a need to raise vitamin D levels prior to starting bone-sparing treatment for osteoporosis
  • where a specialist clinician recommends using Domnisol due to comorbidity/medicines which may be impacting the 25 hydroxylation of vitamin D

Prescribers will need to document the reason why colecalciferol is not suitable when prescribing Domnisol and this should be done on the prescription itself as well as the patient record.
