Dexmedetomidine should only be administered by, or under the direct supervision of, personnel experienced in it use, with adequate training in anaesthesia and airway management.
Dexmedetomidine is an alpha2-adrenergic agonist with sedative properties. It is used in ICU patients where there is difficulty in extubation and weaning patients off sedation. There is an agreed local protocol for prescribing.
Off label indications approved: Intranasally for paediatric procedural sedation according to local Trust guidelines.
